Rustic Rolling Pin | Spearfish SD
28 Feb 2019
The Rustic Rolling Pin has made such a name for itself, that the drive to Spearfish meant nothing to us. We had been told over and over again about their famed caramel rolls. "Call ahead to make sure they still have some!" But it is the reputation of their coffee that really had us excited. More than once, we were told that Rustic Rolling Pin created the "best cup of coffee in the Black Hills," multiple times from completely different groups of people. Funny, how when I arrived (unannounced), a local sitting at a table by the window, took one look at the frozen grimace on my face, and said, "You must be here for a hot cup of coffee!"
Yes, please. And a heated blanket, if you have one handy.
The smell of coffee and fresh caramel rolls should be enough to draw even the most non-morning person out of bed. But, really, what I first thought was, how great of a stop this would be on the way to Terry Peak.
Grabbing big cups of coffee (which, I can tell you, I will forever be a huge fan of) and breakfast sandwiches with a caramel roll to share, would be the best way to face that snowy peak.
Let this be your new tradition. It will be for us!
This intimidating machine, coupled with custom blended coffee beans, is where the magic begins. It's no wonder I am constantly disappointed in my morning coffee. How do you even compete with this?!
I wish I could have taken a picture of the faces of customers as they ate these rolls - little kiddos licking their fingers, Mama's stealing a bite or two, friends splitting one as they visit over coffee. Pure joy and contentment abound.
However, there is more to show you than just food. The Rustic Rolling Pin is cozily decorated with the sweetest touches. Depression glass to house your sugar of choice. Warm wood countertops to place your coffee. Huge windows to bathe everyone in light...
And, as you would expect, family heirlooms in the shape of rolling pins. The blue enameled one will forever have my heart!
The locals (as we all know and love!) couldn't have been more fun to visit with. We talked shop about photography (and shared pictures of bald eagles). They explained the Rustic Rolling Pin is as much a business as it is a tradition. Everyone has a favorite table, a favorite joke, and a good story to share.
I can't help but think of all the visitors we will share our beautiful Black Hills this summer that will love this place. The Rustic Rolling Pin is a very good taste of what it's like to live in South Dakota.
Here is a glimpse of sweet Kari Clites - the owner and chef. She has a smile that lights up the entire room, and her stories of travel (ITALY!) and how she was inspired to bring quality and consideration into every item she serves at Rustic will give you a better appreciation of the hard work and love that goes into keeping a small, locally owned business thriving.
Kari is inspiring. And someone you would want to call your friend. (And someone you would want to bring you food when you are sick! Ha!)
Two generations today. However, there have been four generations behind that counter.
I told them to call me next time that happens and we'll get another photo. Plus, it will give me a chance to try their lunch menu.
The soups, panini sandwiches, and desserts are the real showstoppers, according to Kari.
"I use a little of this and a little of that. I go by taste, not by a recipe, but creating soup recipes is definitely where my passion is."
Lucky for us that this Sturgis girl brought a little taste of Italian coffee... and the love of quality food home to all of us.
Go for a mid-afternoon snack with your kids. Go for a cup of coffee with your favorite pal. Go for lunch. Go before or after skiing. But whatever you do, just go.
