Summer often gets all the attention when it comes to oudoor living, but in the Black Hills, many would argue that fall is the best season to enjoy your backyard. The intense heat has faded, the leaves begin to change, the crowds disappear, and cool evenings create the perfect setting for gathering with family and friends.

Yet many homeowners unknowingly shorten their outdoor season by treating their backyard as a collection of features instead of a thoughtfully designed living space.

When people begin planning an outdoor project, they often start with a product. They want a fire pit, a fireplace, an outdoor kitchen, or a pergola. While those amenities can certainly add value and enjoyment, the real success of an outdoor space comes from something much less obvious: its layout.

Professional landscape designers think about how people will use a space before deciding what goes into it. Where will guests naturally gather? Can someone carry food from the house without weaving around furniture? Is there enough room for children to play while adults visit? Will people actually sit here when the wind picks up on a cool October evening?

The answers to those questions often determine whether a backyard becomes a destination or simply a nice view from the window.

Fire features are a perfect example. Many people assume that simply adding a fire pit will make their patio more enjoyable. In reality, placement often matters more than the fire itself. A beautiful fire pit located in an exposed area may sit unused because smoke constantly blows toward the seating area or the wind carries away its warmth. A thoughtfully positioned fire feature, protected from prevailing winds and surrounded by comfortable seating, naturally becomes the heart of the space.

Another decision homeowners face is whether a wood-burning or gas fire feature is the better choice. The answer depends less on which is “best” and more on how the space will be used. Wood fires provide the familiar crackle, aroma, and tradition that many people associate with autumn evenings. They create an experience that feels rustic and nostalgic but require firewood, maintenance, and cleanup.

Gas fire features offer a different advantage: convenience. They ignite instantly, produce consistent heat, and eliminate smoke and ash, making them ideal for entertaining or enjoying a quick evening outdoors after a busy day. While they may lack some of the character of a wood fire, they often see more frequent use simply because they are so easy to enjoy.

Scale is equally important. Bigger isn’t always better. A patio should feel comfortable rather than oversized, and seating should encourage conversation while still allowing people to move freely. Sometimes a simple seat wall or a well-placed planter contributes more to the overall experience than adding another expensive feature. The best designs create balance, making the space feel inviting instead of crowded or empty.

Perhaps the biggest misconception is that outdoor living is about adding more amenities. In reality, it’s about creating experiences. Some of the most memorable evenings aren’t defined by elaborate materials or impressive features but by simple moments—kids roasting marshmallows, neighbors lingering over conversation, or a quiet cup of coffee while watching the sun disappear behind the hills.

As temperatures begin to cool across western South Dakota, it’s worth remembering that outdoor season doesn’t have to end with summer. Thoughtful planning and intentional design can extend the enjoyment of your backyard well into the fall and create spaces that people naturally want to use.

The best outdoor spaces aren’t the ones with the biggest patios or the most expensive features. They’re the ones that quietly invite people to stay a little longer.
