Why Everyone Needs a Plan – and Three Steps to Get Started

When many people hear the term estate planning, they picture sprawling estates, family trusts worth millions, and complex legal strategies reserved for the ultra-wealthy. The reality is far different. If you own a home, have a retirement account, maintain a bank account, own a business, or simply care about what happens to your loved ones, you already have an estate—and you need a plan.
Estate planning is fundamentally about making sure the right assets go to the right people at the right time. It is also about protecting yourself and your family if illness or incapacity prevents you from making decisions. Without a plan, state laws determine who receives your property, who manages your affairs, and, in some cases, who cares for your minor children. Those outcomes may not reflect your wishes.
The good news is that estate planning does not have to be complicated. In fact, most people can begin with a handful of essential documents. A will allows you to direct how your assets will be distributed and name guardians for minor children. A durable power of attorney designates someone to handle financial matters if you become unable to do so. A healthcare power of attorney and living will ensure medical decisions align with your wishes. For many families, a revocable living trust may also provide benefits such as avoiding probate, maintaining privacy, and simplifying the transfer of assets.
Getting started is easier than many people think. A successful estate plan can be built around three simple questions:
1. Where are you now?
Start by taking inventory of what you own and the planning you’ve already completed. Review your assets, including real estate, investment accounts, retirement plans, life insurance, business interests, and personal property. Gather any existing estate planning documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Understanding your current situation provides the foundation for every future decision.
2. Where Do You Want to Go?
Next, clarify your goals. Do you want to protect a spouse, provide for children, avoid probate, maintain privacy, minimize taxes, preserve family harmony, support a favorite charity, or ensure business continuity? Estate planning is not just about assets—it is about aligning your wealth with your values and the legacy you want to leave behind.
3. How Will You Get There?
Once you understand where you are and where you want to go, you can identify the strategies and documents needed to achieve those objectives. This may include wills, trusts, beneficiary reviews, powers of attorney, gifting strategies, life insurance, or business succession planning. Working with an experienced team of advisors can help create a personalized roadmap tailored to your family’s unique needs.
Estate planning is not about how much money you have—it is about protecting the people and values that matter most. The best plan is not necessarily the most sophisticated one. It is the one you put in place before your family needs it.
